Lightyear was founded in 2016 by five Solar Team Eindhoven alumni, with the mission to provide clean mobility for everyone, everywhere. The company is developing super efficient, solar powered Electric Vehicles, starting with the Lightyear One: a five seater EV with 725 kms of range on a single charge, supplemented with 5m2 of solar panels. Through rigorous systems engineering the platform the car is built on achieves an energy consumption that is half that of conventional EV’s on the market.

About Lightyear
Role in NEON
Within NEON Lightyear is working with TNO and the Eindhoven University of Technology on the future vehicles by approaching the engineering problem as an optimization problem. Together we will develop new model based systems engineering tools to shift the activities of engineers to a new abstraction level where they think about what to build instead of how to build it The focus is on the development of future (families of) electric powertrains.
Motivation for joining NEON
In today’s fast paced environment user demands are changing faster than the industry is able to develop new models. Traditional automotive development cycles take about 4 years from concept to start of production.
Faster cycles are needed to keep up with changing user demands. Faster cycles can be used to develop a more optimized product in the same timeframe (because more iterations are possible), or they can provide more variety with the same quality.
Therefore the goal is to develop new methods for faster development cycles using model based systems engineering – leading to more optimized and faster developed products.
